Angel Share began with a quiet moment of noticing.
During the fall of 2021 in Southern Indiana, John and Tara Deines realized that a close friend, a former teacher who had spent years serving others, was suddenly never driving alone. Instead, she and her daughter were sharing the same car day after day, stretching one vehicle across two very different lives. One was headed to work to serve a family. The other was headed to practices, meets, and the demanding schedule of a Division I athlete.
At first, it looked like a busy season. But over time, they discovered something heavier underneath.
An insurance policy had accidentally lapsed. Then an accident happened. The car was repaired, but the repair bill had not been paid, leaving the vehicle sitting, finished but out of reach. For months, this family quietly adjusted, sacrificed and kept moving forward without asking for help.
As Christmas approached, John and Tara began calling local dealerships, trying to find the car. Eventually, they did. And when they found it, they paid the balance in full.
Inside a Christmas card, they gave their friends a simple message:
Your car is ready and fully paid. You can pick it up. We love you. Merry Christmas!
What followed was unforgettable. Tears were shared. Relief filled the room. A burden that had been quietly carried for months was suddenly lifted.
That moment changed everything.
John and Tara saw how one practical gift, given at just the right time, could travel farther than anyone imagined. It was not extravagant. It was not complicated. But it restored freedom, dignity, and peace to a family that had already given so much to their community.
The first Angel Share grant was given to a teacher. And from that gift, a mission was born.
Angel Share exists to support the local heroes among us: teachers, coaches, caregivers, first responders, and community servants who pour their lives into others, but may not have an emergency fund when life takes an unexpected turn.
Because sometimes, the distance between struggle and hope is one repaired car, one paid bill, one act of kindness.
And sometimes, a small gift can carry someone all the way home.
